Classical
Well, last week my flautist friend and I performed Mvt. 1 and Mvt. 3 of this Mozart flute concerto! It was like, thirty minutes of music in total. I am very proud of our work on it.
You can watch professional musicians (not us) performing all three movements in less than twenty minutes. Speed demons!!
The classical music I’ve been listening to lately is basically whatever my students are working on. I asked a student recently to familiarize himself with Debussy’s Children Corner suite, which is just so delightful.
Oh wait, but I’ve also been listening to Aaron Copland—because I have a piece coming out soon about him in the classical music magazine I write for! So here’s a tease for my forthcoming article: Copland’s Appalachian Spring suite.
Jazz
Earlier this month I went to upstate New York for a week to spend time with my family, and then my partner’s family. Visiting my childhood home, I left with a few boxes full of assorted objects from my high school days, including an accordion(!) as well as lots of jazz piano books. I haven’t had much time to play around with all my old jazz piano books, but I really enjoyed cracking open a book of transcriptions of Thelonious Monk compositions, especially this one:
I haven’t been particularly listening to any jazz lately, but I should.
Pop
Alas, I haven’t been playing any pop piano lately, but at the same concert last week where I performed Mozart with my flautist friend, I also sang a Maggie Rogers duet with my singer friend! So here is that song, “New Song”:
And hey, I’m so excited that Wednesday—our awesome local-ish band (they’re from Asheville)—is coming out with a new album soon. They have released a few singles already. Here is the latest one:
